A family, in the depression era, struggles to survive in the stubby hills of the Missouri Ozarks. Sister, a spirited child and her father’s favorite pushes beyond her communities boundaries. Burdened with a vision of a world unlike their valley, she seeks to know its sound and color. A helpful Librarian points her to a job as a live-in baby sitter for a wealthy Saint Louis family – the Foristell’s. In their world of power and excess, she finds comfort and dramatic difference. She is freed from the deprivation of the 1930’s life she has known, but not from a society advocating strict adherence to history, its rules and smothering demands; in effect tethering her to living an insular life; and more crushing, agonizing lies, driven by consuming hatreds. She finds herself trapped, but resisting powerful emotional forces determined to thwart her choices.
